Gorillas share about 98.3% of their DNA with humans, making them our closest living relatives after chimpanzees and bonobos. They provide an uncanny and profound mirror into human nature. Did you know there are fewer than 1,100 mountain gorillas remaining in the world with approximately half of them residing in Uganda and Rwanda? A gorilla trekking adventure allows you to see them in their natural habitat, where they thrive. A gorilla trekking adventure also helps to sustain efforts to conserve the majestic species.

However, if you are reading this, you probably don’t need convincing, as you likely already know how extraordinary these endangered gorillas are.

Wild mountain gorillas are found only in Uganda, Rwanda, and the Democratic Republic of the Congo. So which is the right option for you? Let us guide you in making this important decision.

At Adumu Safaris, we offer gorilla trekking journeys in both Uganda and Rwanda. We design each itinerary around your travel style, whether you’re looking for a luxury escape, a photography-focused expedition, or an adventurous safari that combines gorilla trekking with wildlife viewing. We pride ourselves in our efforts in sustainability, authentic travel and cultural immersion. We highly recommend pairing your gorilla trekking adventure with some cultural trips, which we highlight in this article.

The Journey Begins: Rwanda.

You wake at dawn at your luxury resort; the air is crisp and chilly, and the birds chirp encouragingly. After a hearty breakfast and a hot cup of local Rwandan coffee, you do a quick check to make sure you have all your gear, then set off.

Your private driver drives you to Kinigi Park Headquarters, where you are met with freshly brewed espresso, tea, and a warm fire at the open-air pavilion. After a performance of the traditional Intore (Dance of the Heroes), you get to meet the rest of your team.

After a short and informative briefing where you will learn about the gorilla family you are about to encounter, you set off to the base of the trailhead where your hike begins. After passing through agricultural fields, you step into the cool of the bamboo forest. The light filters through and shadows dance at your feet as you set off in earnest.

The Journey Begins: Uganda

A 5:30 am wake-up call marks the start of an exciting day ahead. The sound of birds and howling colobus monkeys fills the morning air. After a hearty breakfast (which you definitely need to get through the trek), you set off to the park rangers’ station.

The headquarters are simple and rustic, with nearby mahogany trees shrouded in morning mist. You are greeted with soulful songs and traditional drumming. Your team gathers for a meeting, where the head warden provides the necessary information and emphasizes the strict 10-meter wildlife distance rule. You are then assigned a specific gorilla family that you will aim to encounter, depending on your physical capabilities. Once assigned, your support team will introduce themselves, and for many, this is the start of a wonderful friendship.

The expedition begins as you step into the dense vegetation. A tangle of thick vines and a slippery root system immediately makes you slow down. You can tell this will be a slow, methodical, and arduous journey, but you also know how worthwhile it will be. This is an adventure of a lifetime.

Choices: Rwanda or Uganda for Gorilla Trekking?

Choosing between Rwanda and Uganda for gorilla trekking primarily depends on your budget, time constraints, and desired level of luxury. Our gorilla trekking adventures are tailored to meet your needs and interests, ensuring you have a trip of a lifetime. Here is some info to help you make your decision between Uganda and Rwanda.

Rwanda vs Uganda: Which Gorilla Trekking Destination Is Easier to Reach?

If you prefer shorter drive time, then Rwanda is the choice for you. In Rwanda, the gorillas can be found in Volcanoes National Park, which is located in the Northwestern part of the country, a mere two- to three-hour drive north of the capital city of Kigali.

If you don’t mind a slightly longer drive, then Uganda is a great option. In Uganda, gorilla trekking takes place in Bwindi Impenetrable National Park, which lies in the southwestern part of the country and borders the Democratic Republic of the Congo. A drive to Bwindi Impenetrable National Park from Kampala, the capital of the country, takes about seven to nine hours. It can also be accessed via a short domestic flight.

How Difficult Is Gorilla Trekking in Rwanda vs Uganda?

Gorilla trekking in Bwindi Impenetrable National Park in Uganda is generally more physically demanding than in Volcanoes National Park in Rwanda. Fun fact: Bwindi Impenetrable National Park earned the title ‘Impenetrable’ due to the dense vegetation that covers the land and makes trekking a true adventure in itself.

Bwindi Impenetrable features a dense rainforest with twisting ravines. Hikes involve steep climbs and descents, and the clay-based mud requires extra exertion with every step. The treks range from two to eight hours, depending on which sector and habituated family you are attempting to reach.

Volcanoes in Rwanda features meadows, well-established trails, bamboo forests, and volcanic slopes. The terrain is gentler and offers good visibility. The treks are shorter, averaging between two and four hours. If you are in search of a less arduous trek, this is the choice for you.

Rwanda vs Uganda Gorilla Trekking Permit Costs

If affordability is your main consideration, then Uganda is the choice for you if you are looking for a standard package.

Standard permits cost about $800 for non-residents whilst an extended four-hour Gorilla Habituation Experience costs about $1500.

In Rwanda, permits cost $1,500 for non-residents. However, a discounted price is available if you first spend at least two nights in other Rwandan national parks.

What is the Gorilla Habituation Experience?

The Gorilla Habituation Experience, which is currently only offered at Bwindi Impenetrable National Park is a conservation activity whereby travelers get to assist in helping wild mountain gorillas grow accustomed to human presence. This experience involves groups of four (unlike the usual groups of eight on standard experiences) who accompany researchers and rangers. Travelers get to spend up to four amazing hours in the presence of the gorillas. It’s an extraordinary, hands-on conservation experience.

Scenery

Both national parks offer stunning views and great photo opportunities.

Dramatic volcanic backdrops, vibrant bamboo forests and airy landscapes characterize the scenery at Volcanoes National Park. Open framing, high light levels, and clean sightlines make for a photographer’s dream. The trails usually start at the edges of farmland and gradually transition into bamboo forests.

Bwindi Impenetrable National Park offers a moody vibe. You will trek through giant hardwood trees, tangled vines, thick ferns, slippery root systems, and lush vegetation. The forest is dark and misty at times, giving it a mysterious air. The terrain is also known for its craggy ridges and deep valleys.  Photographers who enjoy a dark, moody aesthetic and intimate spaces will love the setting this trek provides.

Culture and Local Experiences

Whether you choose Uganda or Rwanda, both countries have much to offer in terms of cultural experiences.

The Gorilla Guardians Village

Rwanda offers various cultural experiences, including a visit to The Gorilla Guardians Village located near the national park. This project was set up to convert former poachers into conservationists. The tour includes viewing replica huts, witnessing traditional marriage reenactments, and learning from local medicine men as they mix herbal remedies.

Intore

If you enjoy performances, you will enjoy watching Intore (“The Chosen Ones”) dance groups perform. The traditional dance, led by a multi-drum band, features dancers in traditional attire.

Crafts and Brewing

Rwandans are also excellent at crafting and brewing a variety of homemade beverages. Hands-on workshops are available depending on your interests. These workshops include grinding sorghum or millet on ancient stones, weaving vibrant agaseke baskets, and brewing urwagwa (traditional banana beer).

Replica Royal Palace

And finally, check out a replica of a historical royal palace and learn about the responsibilities and duties of rulers by being crowned King or Queen (don’t get too excited, this is just for the day) by village elders.

The Batwa Cultural Experience

In Uganda, cultural experiences are focused on indigenous survival, forest tracking, and tribal displacement. The Batwa Cultural Experience features immersive trail walks and living-forest classrooms. The living forest classroom tour involves learning how the local tribe harvests wild honey, builds temporary huts, lays traps for small game, and uses natural plants as medicine.

Showcase your bow and arrow skills.

The Batwa tribe hunt using a traditional bow and arrow. They also use small animal traps. Visitors are encouraged to experience using traditional bows and arrows in a mock hunting reenactment and learn about the tribe’s hunting rituals.

Garama Cave

You can also visit the Garama Cave, where the Batwa took refuge during inter-tribal battles. The cave, a natural lava tube measuring an impressive 342 meters in length, is located within Mgahinga National Park. The cave is steeped in history and tells a story of hardship and survival. The Batwa used this location as a tactical shelter and base from which they would launch quick food raids. This cultural day trip involves a round-trip hike that takes between three and four hours.

Coffee Tour

If you love coffee, then a local coffee plantation tour is the choice for you. You will learn to harvest, roast, and grind the coffee beans to make fresh coffee. Complete the tour by taking a moment to enjoy a delicious aromatic cup of coffee.

Luxury Gorilla Safari Lodges in Rwanda vs Uganda

Both locations offer some extraordinary accommodation choices. Uganda offers a more immersive, wild and rustic experience that covers all price points – from budget to luxury. Accommodation is often in the form of stone bungalows or luxury tents.

For a luxury gorilla safari, Rwanda is the choice for you. Rwanda offers a high-end, exclusive experience that often includes five-star resorts with spa services and a personal butler. The resorts offer comfort and luxury so you can focus on the nature and experiences the national park has to offer.

Best Time for Gorilla Trekking

Since gorillas stay in the forests year-round, trips can be taken at any time; however, the dry seasons are often preferred, as trails and hiking conditions are ideal then. The long dry season runs from June to September and the short dry season runs from December to February.

If you don’t mind a bit of rain and mud, then the rainy seasons are a great choice. You can expect fewer people, more lush vegetation and vibrant landscapes that are great for photography. The longer rainy season runs from March to May, whilst the shorter rainy season runs from October to November.

Overall Gorilla Trekking Experience

The Rwanda experience is predictable and well-managed; you are matched with a gorilla family based on your hiking ability. The terrain is easier to hike through, and evenings offer curated cultural showcases and five-star accommodation.

In Uganda, you will experience an adventure of a lifetime as you hike through thick jungle. Hikes last between three and seven hours, and the terrain is rough. You can expect raw wilderness and accommodation that feels immersive. The community is focused on local conservation and cultural heritage.

Which Is Right for You?

The right choice for you depends on your budget, time constraints, hiking abilities, and the type of accommodation you want. One major difference to keep in mind is that Uganda offers a habituation experience that Rwanda does not. Instead of a standard one-hour visit with the Gorillas, Uganda offers an option to spend up to four hours in the presence of a gorilla family.
