You will also gain a sense of the troubled history of Rwanda with a sobering visit to the Genocide Memorial where over 250,000 Genocide victims were put to rest in mass graves. Learn about the nation’s commitment to peace forever, which has served as a model for other nations. In the afternoon, take the scenic drive to Volcanoes National Park in Musanze with stops along the way. On arrival, check into Amarembo Gorilla Village, a place where the wild beauty of nature converges with unmatched luxury. Set amid the lush greenery and majestic mountains of the Virunga region, this lodge presents an extraordinary opportunity to immerse yourself in both the wonders of untamed landscapes and the comforts of contemporary hospitality. Amarembo’s rooms offer a rustic yet sophisticated ambiance, with panoramic windows framing the natural beauty just beyond. This is a very rich forest in terms of history, as it is the place where all Rwandan kings were initiated. The forest is very scenic and full of many bird and butterfly species. Return to Amarembo for an optional guided walk, dinner, and a good night’s sleep in preparation for your exciting gorilla trek in the morning!

Destination: Volcanoes National Park, Musanze; Kigali
Accommodations: Optional additional night at Amarembo
Activities: Gorilla Trek and international departure (or additional day, see below)
Transfer time: Short transfer to ranger station; 2.5 hours to Kigali (if departing on Day 4)

After breakfast, we transfer to the park, completing our park formalities then embark on a once-in-a-lifetime experience of tracking mountain gorillas. Once you spot them, you are allowed to spend an hour watching them closely. This is perhaps one of the most breathtaking wildlife experiences on earth!!! Be back at the base in time for lunch. In the afternoon, transfer to the airport where you will catch your international flight back home or connection to your next destination in East Africa. Alternatively, stay an additional night at Amarembo. See Day 5 activities below.

Destination: Volcanoes National Park, Kigali
Activities: (Optional) Hike to Dian Fossey’s Grave or Hike around the Twin Lakes, Burera and Ruhondo
Transfer time: Short transfer to ranger station for Dian Fossey hike; 45-minute drive to the Twin Lakes; 2.5 hours to Kigali

Depending on your international departure time, you may be able to incorporate an additional activity into your last day in Rwanda.

Twin Lakes (note that this can also be done after the gorilla trek on Day 4 if staying an additional night): After lunch, depart for a guided walk around the beautiful twin lakes–Burera and Ruhondo, where you can also learn about different traditional fishing techniques with local fishermen. Return to Amarembo for lunch and refreshments.

Hike to Dian Fossey’s Grave: After breakfast, your guide will take you to the park entrance for a briefing and grouping before commencing your forest hike to Dian Fossey’s house and gravesite. Trekking to the Dian Fossey Tomb is one of the most sought-after safari activities carried out while visiting Volcanoes National Park for a gorilla trip. The walk from the park boundary to the research center where Dian’s grave is takes about 1 – 1.5 hours and affords good views of forest hogs, forest elephants, a variety of primates, and bird species. This hike is an incredible experience physically, emotionally, and intellectually. It is inspiring to learn about someone who was so dedicated to the Mountain Gorillas and left a legacy that impacts how we think about and respect the gorillas today. The hike involves moving through the forest and hiking up the slopes and therefore requires some relative degree of fitness and patience—a moderate hike accessible to most. At the site, you will see Dian Fossey’s house and the peaceful place where she was buried just next to her favorite gorilla friend, Digit, and about 20 other mountain gorillas who were either killed by poachers or suffered death for other reasons. Return to Amarembo for lunch and refreshments.

After lunch, your Adumu Safaris guide will drive you to Kigali International Airport for your international departure or connection to the next leg of your safari. Kwaheri!
