Arrival at Kilimanjaro Airport. After clearing customs, you will be met by our guide and transferred to the lovely Rivertrees Country Inn. Set in Northern Tanzania just outside the bustling safari town of Arusha, this charming country estate was once an old coffee farm, and still retains the nostalgic air of a well-loved homestead. Sprawling ten acres of fertile greenery, the grounds are a natural extension of Mt Meru’s sloping foothills, and offer a sanctuary for the birds and wildlife indigenous to the area—a perfect place to relax after a long international trip. After settling in, you will meet with an Adumu Safaris representative who will give you a short briefing to review your safari itinerary. You then have the option to relax in the hotel for the rest of day, enjoying your meals at the Inn’s gourmet restaurant, perhaps indulging in a massage at the inn’s spa, or if you are feeling energetic you can go on a coffee plantation walk, a mountain bike village tour, or explore some of the other local attractions before heading home for dinner.

After a delicious breakfast, warm up to Tanzania with a local tour of the bustling village of Usa River. A few hours meandering through Usa River offers an enchanting insight into day-to-day Tanzanian life, and a wonderful way to interact with the vibrant culture of the region. Your guide will lead the way past local farms, stopping to talk farming methods with the people working the fields, before escorting you to the heart of the community to impart a flavor of the color and vitality of the village. Return to the Inn for lunch. After lunch, depart on a short drive to the little-known gem that is Lake Duluti Forest Reserve, whose lake is a crater enclosed by plush slopes of forest leading down to the water’s edge. An afternoon canoeing across its calm surface offers stunning views of Mt Meru, as well as a wealth of birdlife resident to its surrounds. Most notably, flocks of Cattle Egrets numbering in the hundreds swoop in overhead as they return to roost toward evening. Return for another nourishing farm-to-table dinner.

After breakfast, depart for Arusha National Park for your first game drive! Arusha National Park is among of the smallest parks in Tanzania, covering only 137 square kilometers The park has several completely different microhabitats within its confines, from a soda lake which outfits a large number of flamingos, to dense forest habitat for black and white colobus monkeys, to savannah plain, a crater, and the hike-able Mount Meru. Spend the first half of the day viewing wildlife, followed by a picnic lunch in the park. After lunch, enjoy exploring the park by foot on a walking safari and return to the Inn for dinner.

After an early breakfast, your naturalist guide will pick you up from the Inn and drive you 120km to Tarangire National Park for a late morning game drive. Enjoy a picnic lunch in the park and continue with afternoon game viewing—identify different species of mammals such as lion, leopard, elephant, buffalo, python, zebra, oryx, impala, and more. Over 450 species of birds have been observed in this park, so get out your binoculars! Arrive at Tarangire Safari Lodge for dinner, sundowners, and overnight in one of their charming circular bungalows, built in a similar style to the Maasai boma. These airy rooms are situated near a large watering hole, creating the opportunity to watch wildlife from your shaded verandah.

Wake to the peaceful sounds of birds and wildlife, and perhaps enjoy a morning yoga session on the Lodge’s wooden platform overlooking the Tarangire River. After breakfast, enjoy a long morning of game viewing, stopping for a picnic lunch. This park is known as the park of elephants and baobabs, both of which as are scattered everywhere. The Tarangire River is a vital source water to animals in the park where you are likely to find many major species behaving and interacting naturally. After dinner, you have the option to take a night game drive in the park and see how the animals behave after dusk—a greart opportunity to witness the predatory action of lion prides and other predators. Return to the Lodge for a restful night of sleep.

After an early breakfast, depart for the Escarpment Luxury Lodge, a tranquil retreat, perfectly situated in a dramatic location of Lake Manyara National Park on the rim of the Great Rift Valley Gorge with views of wildlife from the wraparound deck. Enjoy lunch in their well-appointed restaurant. After lunch, take a game drive in Lake Manyara National Park, which lies at the base of the western wall of the eastern arm of the Rift Valley. Typically shimmering in a golden heat haze, the lake is often frosted with thousands of flamingos, while the trees that surround the lake are famous for their tree-climbing lions. The park also offers abundant sightings of monkeys, jackals, mongoose, hyenas, hyraxes, zebras, hippos, warthogs, buffalos, Maasai giraffes, duikers, waterbucks, and impalas. Significant numbers of elephants are also resident in the park, whilst sightings of black rhino and leopard are not uncommon. Return to dinner at the lodge.

Destination: Lake Eyasi

After breakfast, depart for Tindiga Tented Camp, a small traditional camp, ideally situated on a hill overlooking the shrub land of the Eyasi Ecosystem, with Mount Masumbuku in the west and the hills of the Ngorongoro area in the north, offering some beautiful views. Lake Eyasi is situated almost a 2-hour drive from Karatu and its shores are home to the last remaining bushmen of Tanzania. This ethnic hunter-gatherer tribe lives in a traditional way in small, tent-like huts which can be quickly erected and, just as quickly, dismantled. The bushmen are nomads, staying at a place only as long as nature can provide them with food. During your tour you will have the possibility to either join the young men on a hunt where, with bows and arrows, they catch birds or small mammals, or to listen to the elders play their homemade string instruments. Return for lunch at the camp and then depart for a walking safari to Lake Eyasi. Return to camp for a bush dinner.

Leaving the lodge after breakfast, drive to the Ngorongoro Crater Conservation Area. Ascend the steep walls of the crater, drive around the rim, and descend to the charming Ngorongoro Farm House, a small and exclusive hotel built on a 500 acre coffee plantation with its hand-plaited thatched roof tops, ample verandas, and colonial interiors which have been designed to take you to the comfort and style of a bygone era. After lunch at the lodge, visit a traditional Maasai village or ‘boma’. In the evening, take a walk around the farm to contemplate the daily activities, relax in the fragrant gardens or enjoy the spectacular sunsets with the Oldeani volcano as a backdrop.

After an early breakfast, drive the short distance to the crater and descend to its floor for a half-day tour, inclusive of a picnic lunch by the hippo pools. Often referred to as ‘the eighth wonder of the world’ the Ngorongoro Crater is one of Africa’s best-known wildlife areas. An UNESCO World Heritage Site, it is also one of the largest volcanic craters in the world (almost 20 kilometers wide, 610-760 meters deep and covering a total area of 264 square kilometers). An utterly unique biosphere, the Crater harbors grasslands, swamps, forests, saltpans, a fresh water lake and a glorious variety of birdlife, all enclosed within its towering walls. Due to its high concentration of wildlife, close-range viewing opportunities and striking scenery it is also Tanzania’s most visited destination. In the afternoon, ascend once more to the rim of the crater and the lodge, where you may like to take a guided walk in one of the most attractive areas of the Ngorongoro Conservation Area to the waterfalls and the descent to the Empakai Crater. Or, you may want a massage! Conclude the evening with a fabulous dinner and sundowner cocktails followed by a traditional Maasai dance performance, including the famous adumu!

Destination: Oldupai Gorge, Serengeti National Park

Today drive to the great Serengeti National Park, the world’s most famous game park. En route, stop and visit Oldupai Gorge (often misspelled as Olduvai), commonly referred to as the “Cradle of mankind”. This site is where the Leakeys made some of the world’s most important archaeological discoveries, including discovering the remains of several early hominids estimated to be around 3.7 million years old. Oldupai is the Maasai word for the wild sisal plant (Sansevieria ehrenbergii), which grows in the gorge. After a picnic lunch, continue on to an exciting game drive in the Serengeti. Arrive at Pumzika Camp, an eco-friendly tented camp reminiscent of the first safaris at the turn of the 20th century, with furniture made by local craftsmen and decorated with handmade carpets woven by the Mbulu women’s community. Set inside the Seronera area, Pumzika occupies a unique and privileged paradise within the Serengeti, far from main roads and civilization, surrounded by the two of the biggest and most prolific lion prides in the park. Settle in, enjoy a bush dinner followed by sundowners beneath an acacia tree on the open savannah.

After breakfast, continue with both morning and afternoon game drives in Serengeti national Park. Totaling 14,763 km2 in area, the park is appropriately named after the Maasai word for “endless plains”. Here you are certain to get up close and personal with the “Big Five” (Lions, Elephants, Rhinos, Leopards, and Cape Buffalo), if you haven’t already, and hosts of other iconic and lesser known species. Given the vast terrain, weather patterns, and migratory patterns of the innumerable species, many animals of the Serengeti are constantly on the move. This makes for an adventurous game drive! Your drives will depend on the move of the migrants; your expert naturalist guide knows very well how to locate the herds. Bush lunch and bush dinner will be at Pumzika.

Today, wake early, and after a cup of tea or coffee and depart on an early morning game drive. The earlier mornings are magical in Serengeti, when the wildlife is just waking up to greet the day. You’ll enjoy your breakfast and lunch in the park as you make your way from the Seronera area toward the Grumeti River, which is especially active with herbivore crossings during the migration. Here, you can get out of your vehicle and enjoy a bush walk near the river. Continue on by vehicle to the shores of Lake Victoria, one of the African Great Lakes, Africa’s largest lake by area, and the world’s largest tropical lake. From here you will board a traditional boat and take a sunset sail to Lukuba Island, a private island in one of Africa’s most unique natural paradises—a perfect place to rest after a long day in the wilderness. Enjoy a delicious dinner in the restaurant, overlooking the lake, and a good night’s sleep in your private bungalow.

Spend the day exploring the private island of Lukuba, which you will have, almost literally, all to yourself! This is a good day to relax and catch up on your journal writing, to walk around the island by yourself and marvel at the unique “tropical lake” ecosystem, rife with monkeys, lizards, and dozens of bird species, and to explore Lake Victoria on a guided boat tour. Enjoy all your meals at the restaurant and a sundowner cocktail on your private beach and large terrace from which to view the incredible sunsets offered by the second largest lake in the world.

Wake early to a cup of coffee or tea and depart before breakfast on a sunrise traditional boat ride from Lukuba to Musoma where you will hop back in your Land Cruiser and depart for a morning game drive through the Serengeti, breakfast en route. Arrive at Pakulala Camp, the only tented camp world located above the Ngorongoro´s crater, settle in and enjoy a nice lunch. After lunch depart on a walking safari inside the crater, ad return for a memorable final dinner and sundowners around the campfire, overlooking the Crater.

Destination: Departure to Arusha or connection to Southern Circuit, Western Circuit, Kenya, Uganda, or Zanzibar

After a hot breakfast and optional nature walk, drive back to Arusha for an optional day or overnight at Rivertrees Country Inn or connect to the next leg of your wildlife safari in the Southern Circuit, chimp trekking in Mahale National Park or Gombe Stream or, gorilla trekking in Uganda.
