Activities: Coffee tour, traditional lunch; Yoga
Transit Times: 25 minutes to and from the lodge

To help combat jet lag, start your Tanzanian adventure with a coffee tour from Tengeru Cultural Tourism, a community owned and operated tour company that benefits the Wameru people around Tengeru. Learn about the origin of coffee, its history in Tanzania, how to cultivate coffee plants, how coffee is harvested, and how it is processed for the market. On the way, meet local farmers and learn about local flora and fauna. Participate in roasting and grinding beans for a cup of coffee made by your own hands. Enjoy a hot local lunch with plenty of delicious vegetarian options at Tengeru before returning to the lodge for a relaxing afternoon. Hang out on your balcony, look for birds in the gardens, go for a swim in the pool, play a game of croquet, or enjoy a tranquil cruise on Karama’s private lake. At your leisure, fit in a yoga practice with views of Africa’s tallest mountain, Mt. Kilimanjaro. Enjoy another farm-to-table meal before sleeping to the sounds of wildlife in the distance.

Destination: Ngorongoro Crater Conservation Area; Karatu
Accommodations: Country Lodge
Activities: Game drive; Yoga
Transit Times: Arusha to the Crater – 4 hrs; Crater – Country Lodge – 2 hrs

After an early breakfast, depart the lodge and drive 200 km toward Ngorongoro Crater, an UNESCO World Heritage site. Ngorongoro Conservation Area is a rare protected area where people (the Maasai) and wild animals coexist in harmony. A large permanent concentration of wild animals can be found in the huge and perfect Crater. Ngorongoro is technically a caldera, the largest sunken ancient caldera in the world. Estimated three million years old, the once-volcanic Ngorongoro is now considered one of “Africa’s eight wonders”. Also known as the “Garden of Eden”, the crater floor is a natural safe-haven for thousands of animals such as wildebeest, more than two-hundred lion prides, zebras, elephants, hippos, hyenas, Thomson gazelles, African buffalo, crocodiles, ostriches, and many species of birds, not to mention that this is one of the best places to spot an endangered rhinoceros. You will spend the afternoon on an amazing game drive in the crater, stopping at the hippo pools for a picnic lunch. In the late afternoon, you will ascend back up the Crater, leave the NCAA and check-in to Country Lodge located on the outskirts of Karatu, a quaint country town on the Great Escarpment, midway between Lake Manyara and the Ngorongoro Conservation Area. Garden paths lead to eleven double cottages surrounded by green lawns, hedged by brightly flowered bougainvillaea, tropical plants and trees. Birds and butterflies feel right at home in the garden, as you will in your private cottage. Pause for a yoga practice in the garden before a delightful farm-to-table meal and a restful night’s sleep.

Destination: Endulen; Serengeti National Park
Accommodation: Pumzika Camp
Activities: Sunrise yoga; Ebeneza Maasai Children Center visit; Game drive
Transit Times: Karatu to Ebeneza – 2 hrs; Ebeneza to Camp – 3 hrs

Greet the day with some sun salutations and a delicious breakfast before departing on a unique cultural adventure! Travel through Ngorongoro Crater to Ebeneza Maasai Children Center where you can see the work of Rev. Jackson Kipuyo and his team who are aiding orphans and poor children from the surrounding Maasai villages. You can participate in campus activities with the children, hand out supplies, share meals, or perhaps lead a kids’ yoga class, and forge some lasting memories. You can also discover more Maasai culture through some of their unique cultural offerings. Afterwards, head to what is perhaps the world’s most iconic wildlife conservation area, Serengeti National Park. A World Heritage Site, the Serengeti is a “must see” on your Tanzania safari. Totalling 14,763 sq km in area, the park is appropriately named after the Maasai work for “endless plains”. Arrive at Pumzika Camp, an eco-friendly tented camp reminiscent of the first safaris at the turn of the 20th century, with furniture made by local craftsmen and decorated with handmade carpets woven by the Mbulu women’s community. Set inside the Seronera area, Pumzika occupies a unique and privileged paradise within the Serengeti, far from main roads and civilization, surrounded by the two of the biggest and most prolific lion prides in the park. Settle in, enjoy a bush dinner followed by sundowners beneath an acacia tree on the open savannah.

Destination: Serengeti National Park
Accommodations: Pumzika Camp
Activities: Game drive; Yoga

After breakfast, continue with both morning and afternoon game drives in Serengeti National Park. Here you are certain to get up close and personal with the “Big Five” (Lions, Elephants, Rhinos, Leopards, and Cape Buffalo), if you haven’t already, and hosts of other iconic and lesser-known species. Given the vast terrain, weather patterns, and migratory patterns of the innumerable species, many animals of the Serengeti are constantly on the move. This makes for an adventurous game drive! Your drives will depend on the move of the migrants; your expert naturalist guide knows very well how to locate the herds. Back at camp, don’t forget to fit in some vinyasas while communing with the magnificent wildlife surrounding camp! Bush lunch and bush dinner will be at Pumzika. Rest to the sounds of wildlife calling in the distance and crickets gently chirping outside your tent.
