You are invited on a once-in-a-lifetime journey into Tanzania, home of Mt. Kilimanjaro, the great Serengeti, the Ngorongoro Crater, and the magical “Spice Island” of Zanzibar! All of these all-inclusive adventures, led by Adumu Safaris’ local expert naturalists and cultural guides, take you on a wildlife, yoga, and service safari through the world-famous Northern Circuit and a tropical yoga retreat in Zanzibar where you will be starting and ending your days practicing yoga in the most iconic and inspiring settings on earth!

This itinerary features two community experiences, a visit to the Maasailand Development for Women and Children’s primary school and women’s beading project in the West Kilimanjaro region and a visit to the Jambiani village primary school on the island of Zanzibar. Destinations are connected by flight in order to combine highlights in Northern Tanzania with a short beach holiday in a short stay within a budget price range. 

Itinerary

Destination: Transfer to Ngare Nanyuki from JKO

Arrival at Kilimanjaro Airport. After clearing customs, you will be met by an Adumu Safaris guide and transferred to Osiligilai Maasai Lodge, a scenic eco-lodge where you immediately will come to rest and reflect on the essentials while enjoying an immersive cultural experience with the Maasai. In the middle of the wilderness of the Maasai steppe are 18 exclusive bungalows built with locally available natural materials sustainably produced by local craftspeople. Just outside your door is a great view of Mount Kilimanjaro, Africa’s tallest mountain. It’s all about being together, traditions, stories, and learning from each other at Osiligilai. Upon arrival, you will be warmly welcomed with a traditional Maasai dance and song. Then, you will be served a traditional Maasai welcome drink before being guided to your private bungalow. While you are here, relax, unwind, and enjoy the “Warm Your Heart: meditation room, the natural sauna, and pool. At sunset, stretch away the strain of your travels with yoga and enjoy a delicious dinner overlooking the savannah. After a long day, nothing will feel more restful than falling asleep to the sounds of passing wildlife and chirping insects.

Welcome the sunrise over Mt. Kilimanjaro with some gentle sun salutations on the terrace to start your trip. After breakfast, visit the social project Maasailand Development for Women and Children (MDWC) in Tinga Tinga village. On your way, get your first glimpses of iconic East African wildlife! At MDWC, engage with Maasai primary-school children and take part in the school activities. The children love having visitors, and their beautiful smiles will make this a memorable day. Afterward, visit the local women’s group and see how they make traditional Maasai jewelry like necklaces and earrings, etc. for their own economic empowerment. Perhaps you will want to purchase some of the beautiful beadwork to support the women and have something meaningful to take home with you. Return to the lodge for lunch and spend some time exploring the lodge or meditating in the Warm Your Heart meditation room and sauna. In the early evening, join the group to watch, or even participate in, a Maasai spear-throwing competition. Can you beat the Maasai and hit the wooden lion target with the Maasai spear? As the sun sets, enjoy your first sundowners while watching the Maasai perform the traditional Adumu dance. In the evening, gather around the fire for some traditional storytelling and a delicious dinner overlooking the savannah. You will learn about their way of life and countless traditions. Rest in your traditionally decorated bungalow to prepare for tomorrow’s exciting adventures!

Today, fly to the great Serengeti National Park, the world’s most famous game park. Enjoy some sunrise yoga and a delicious breakfast before saying “kwaheri” to your friends at Osiligilai and boarding a plane to Seronera airstrip in the middle of Serengeti National Park. Arrive by lunch at Pumzika Camp, an eco-friendly tented camp reminiscent of the first safaris at the turn of the 20th century, with furniture made by local craftsmen and decorated with handmade carpets woven by the Mbulu women’s community. Set inside the Seronera area, Pumzika occupies a unique and privileged paradise within the Serengeti, far from main roads and civilization, surrounded by the two of the biggest and most prolific lion prides in the park. After settling in, head out with your expert guide on your first exciting game drive! Totaling 14,763 km2 in area, the park is appropriately named after the Maasai word for “endless plains”. Here you are certain to get up close and personal with the “Big Five” (Lions, Elephants, Rhinos, Leopards, and Cape Buffalo), if you haven’t already, and hosts of other iconic and lesser-known species. Given the vast terrain, weather patterns, and migratory patterns of the innumerable species, many animals of the Serengeti are constantly on the move. This makes for an adventurous game drive! In the early evening, return to camp and enjoy a bush dinner followed by sundowners beneath an acacia tree on the open savannah. Enjoy the sound of majestic beasts passing outside your glamping tent as you fall asleep.

After breakfast, continue with both morning and afternoon game drives in Serengeti National Park. Your drives will depend on the move of the migrants; your expert naturalist guide knows very well how to locate the herds. Bush lunch and bush dinner will be at Pumzika.

Destination: Zanzibar; Dole; Kizimkazi

Transit Times: Flight from Seronera to Zanzibar – 2.5 hrs; ZNZ to Dole, 25 mins; Dole to Kizimkazi 1 hr, 15 mins

After breakfast, you will be driven to the Seronera airstrip to board your flight to the magical island of Zanzibar, which lies just off the coast of Tanzania, for a sublime conclusion to your East African holiday. After arriving at Zanzibar airport, you will be met by an Adumu Safaris representative and taken 16 km to a rural Spice farm for a signature spice tour. Zanzibar is known as the “Spice Island”, a name that evokes a romantic past infused with the particular aroma of cloves, cinnamon, cardamom, and lemongrass. Today, these and many other spices, herbs, and tropical fruits are cultivated on the same plantations that have been producing them for centuries. A Spice farm tour will take you on a walk through the plantation to sample a variety of mouth-watering tropical fruits and spices. The tour additionally includes a bit of history with a visit to the Kidichi Persian Baths and the Maruhubi Palace Ruins. After the tour, walk to the outdoor kitchen to prepare a sumptuous Swahili meal using many of the spices and fruits you have just sampled, with the guidance of an expert Zanzibari home cook. Afterward, continue south to the fishing village of Kizimkazi in Menai Bay (the largest conservation area in Zanzibar) on the southwest coast where lies Karamba Zanzibar, a tropical paradise­ of Palm trees, Banana trees and a lush garden with local flowers, white sandy beaches, sparkling clear warm water in­ turquoise lagoons and colorful coral reefs teeming with abundant marine life. Check into your seafront cottages and enjoy some time relaxing at the lodge. Yoga is a perfect afternoon activity led by the lodge’s instructor or by your own group in an intimate setting of open atmosphere overlooking the Indian Ocean, which will induce relaxation and inner stillness to emerge. Hari om. Afterward, you might want to indulge in an Ayurvedic spa treatment or massage followed by a swim in the infinity pool or the ocean. The dolphins in Menai Bay of Kizimkazi are known for being habituated to humans, so swimming here means an opportunity to swim with these playful, friendly creatures! Dinner featuring homegrown produce is in the lodge restaurant followed by amazing sunsets and stargazing. Sleep to the sound of waves lapping outside your door.

After a morning yoga session and relaxed seaside breakfast, you will be driven 28 km to the lush Jozani Forest Reserve, which offers a unique variety of land animals such as the indigenous red colobus monkey, the blue Sykes monkey, and the adorable bushbaby. You are also likely to see some of the 50 butterfly species, 40 bird species, and several species of snake. Next, head to Jambiani Village for a tour and service visit. These community-based and led tours are different from day to day since village life also varies, but you will gain a glimpse into rural coastal life, and you are sure to witness the seaweed farming and production of local handicrafts that are always going on there. Visit the village school, meet the children, and distribute donations that you raise before your trip, if you wish. Proceed to a village mama’s house where she and her friends will show you how they make a Swahili style lunch with the fresh abundance the island has to offer. Return to Karamba to simply relax by the pool or at the beach. If you’re a snorkeling aficionado, head out to some of the best coral reefs in the world to spot multitudes of colorful fish and other sea life. The late afternoon is also a great time for a group yoga session. Later on, enjoy a beach dinner with more sunsets and stars, and more waves lulling you to sleep.

Wake to the sound of waves and step out onto the sand for a nice stretch! After a tropical breakfast, set sail into Menai Bay where you can glide alongside pods of dolphins, which local conservation efforts have allowed to flourish. Mid-morning, land on a powdery sandbank and enjoy a yoga practice in the sun under the clear Zanzibari sky, then snorkel over two different reefs, both offering a variety of pristine marine life. After working up an appetite, the Kwale Island “restaurant” is ready and waiting for your arrival where you will feast on a freshly prepared tropical buffet. Taste 10-15 of Zanzibar’s exotic fruits, and sip on Amarula and coffee. Mid-afternoon, discover all that Kwale island has to offer: sail on a traditional ngalawa canoe, explore the mangroves, climb an ancient baobab, witness the coral formations, swim or lounge the afternoon away on a day-bed on the beach. Finally, in late afternoon when the day is done, the crew hoists the lateen sail as you make a leisurely voyage back to Kizimkazi as the sun sets on your glorious day in paradise. Beach dinner with more sunsets and stars, and more waves lulling you to sleep.

After breakfast and, perhaps, another swim or spa service, check out of the lodge by lunch and head to the airport to fly from Zanzibar to Dar es Salaam, where you will board your international flight home. Kwaheri!
